EOFY 26 Vinova Market Report Webinar: The Energy Transition Enters Its Next Phase

Australia’s energy and infrastructure market is moving into a new phase.

In Vinova’s EOFY 26 Market Report Webinar, Richard and Bryce unpack the key trends shaping the sector, covering everything from renewable generation and grid infrastructure to project delivery, data centres, hiring demand and the talent challenges ahead.

One of the clearest takeaways from the session was that the energy transition is no longer being defined by renewable generation alone. It is now being shaped by the infrastructure required to support it, including transmission, grid access, utility infrastructure, battery storage, energy security and digital infrastructure.

A Strong Finish To The Financial year

Q4 was a strong quarter for the Vinova team, with hiring activity increasing across energy, infrastructure and data centres.
Generation continues to attract investment, but the focus is shifting towards the infrastructure behind it.

Substations, transmission, grid capability and utility infrastructure are all playing a bigger role in how Australia’s energy transition moves forward.

Project Delivery Is Becoming The Priority

A major theme across the webinar was the shift from development into execution.

Over the last 12 months, many projects that were previously in planning, procurement or development have started moving into construction. This has created stronger demand for construction managers, site supervisors, electrical supervisors, HSE professionals and project engineers.

Regional hiring has also become more important, with clients increasingly looking for talent who are local to project locations or open to DIDO arrangements.

Contract hiring is also growing, as organisations use project budgets to bring in experienced talent quickly rather than waiting for permanent headcount approval.

Data Centres Are Reshaping The Market

Data centres are reshaping the market.

Data centres were highlighted as one of the fastest-growing sectors across 2026. Driven by major investment, AI-related demand and the expansion of domestic and international operators across Australia, the sector is now creating demand across construction, delivery, development, utilities, engineering, operations and energy management.

The biggest challenge emerging in this space is power availability. Access to grid capacity is becoming a major factor in project viability and development timelines, increasing demand for professionals with grid connection, utility management and stakeholder engagement experience.

There is also growing overlap between the energy and data centre sectors, with professionals moving across from renewables, transmission and utilities into development, grid, engineering and leadership roles.

Engineering Talent Remains Highly Competitive

Engineering remains one of the most active and competitive areas of the market.

Battery energy storage systems continue to drive hiring demand, particularly for engineers with utility-scale BESS experience across grid connections, substations and balance of plant design and delivery.

Another key shift is that more developers are bringing technical capability in-house. Rather than relying heavily on external consultants, organisations are investing in engineers who can challenge design assumptions, manage technical risk and provide leadership across the project lifecycle.

The most in-demand roles include senior electrical engineers, grid connection managers, BESS specialists, substation engineers, power systems engineers and technical managers.

Hiring Success Is Often Process Driven

While talent shortages remain a challenge, Bryce highlighted that many hiring issues are process-driven.
The organisations achieving the strongest hiring outcomes are those with clear structures, aligned stakeholders, fast feedback and transparent communication.

Candidates are becoming increasingly selective, looking beyond salary to assess project quality, leadership, progression, roster arrangements, flexibility and company culture.
In a competitive market, even short delays between interview stages can result in losing strong candidates to other opportunities.
